  • Travel Hack: Option here as well is to take the bus or train to the Eze sur Mer train station, which will take approx 35 minutes and walk the Nietzsche trail up to the village of eze.

Best Time to Visit Village Èze French Riviera

Village Èze is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit is during the spring and early fall when the weather is mild and the crowds are fewer. Summer can be quite busy, especially with day-trippers from Nice and Monaco, so if you’re looking for a quieter experience, plan your visit in the shoulder seasons.

Regardless of the season, try to arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon for the best experience. We arrived early in the morning and loved the stillness of the village. Getting early, or late will mean less crowds and softer weather with the chance of a sunrise and sunset making the Eze experience even more magical.

Explore Jardin Exotique – The Crown Jewel of Èze

One of the highlights of my visit was exploring the le Jardin Exotique, or the Exotic Garden. Located at the top of the hill, this garden is home to an impressive collection of cacti and succulents, some standing over 10 feet tall.

Jardin Exotique Village of Eze France

But it’s not just the exotic plants that make this spot special; it’s the unbeatable panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, the port and surrounding landscapes. Many agree with me that its the best view of the French Riviera!

In the garden, sculptures and winding pathways make each corner feel like a discovery. The effort to climb up here is well-rewarded, as you can gaze over the rooftops of Èze Village and down the coastline of the French Riviera.

The view stretches all the way to Nice, France, on a clear day, and even beyond, capturing the rugged cliffs and tranquil blue waters that make this region so iconic.

The history of the Jarding Exotique and its Ruins at the top

The ruins at the summit of Èze’s Exotic Garden are a testament to the village’s rich and tumultuous history. Since the end of the Iron Age, Èze has been a strategically valuable site, settled by locals around 220 BC for protection on its rocky promontory.

The “Ezasques” built their homes around the protective rock, and in the 12th century, the Lords of Èze constructed a fortress to defend the village. This fortress, safeguarded by soldiers known as “Castellans” under the Counts of Provence and later the Dukes of Savoy, served as a crucial defensive stronghold.

However, in 1706, during the Spanish Wars, Louis XIV ordered its destruction to prevent it from being used against the French.

A Unique Perspective over the French Riviera

From Jardin Exotique, you can truly appreciate the strategic significance of Èze Village, as it commands views in every direction. The medieval village appears like a fortress from this vantage point, with each house, hotel, and alley contributing to the patchwork beauty below.

The views are equally mesmerizing at any time of day, from the warm morning light to the golden rays of sunset.

Hiking the Nietzsche Trail for a Scenic Adventure

One of our most enjoyable activities around the village of Èze was hiking the Nietzsche Path, a path famously taken by the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Legend has it that Nietzsche found inspiration for his book Thus Spoke Zarathustra while climbing this steep trail from Èze sur Mer to the hilltop village.

The hike offers both a physical challenge and a unique perspective of the French Riviera as you make your way up the rugged path surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes.

How long and far is the Nietzsche Path?

This trail is not for the faint-hearted, as it involves steep inclines and rocky terrain. What people forget, is that its a 300 meter (1000 feet) elevation from the station (or the beach) to the village of Èze. However, for those who are up for the challenge, the reward is well worth it. Depending on your level of fitness, it will take approx 1 hour to 1.30 on your way up. The route down will only be around 40 minutes.

What will you see along the Nietzsche Path?

Along the way, you’ll catch glimpses of the Mediterranean Sea through the trees. We saw a variety of Mediterranean plants, including fragrant pines, wildflowers, and olive trees. The further up you go, the better the view will be. We stopped constantly to enjoy the view and also to take some rest.

During the hike you will see several historical markers with occasional plaques from Friedrich NIetzsche who was inspired by this path while writing Thus Spoke Zarathustra.
