Railay Beach, my daughter looking through an opening in the jungle from a viewpoint to the beautiful ocean and rockformations

Thailand is a place that’s impossible to forget. The Best Places of Thailand for me are wide spread and both in the north, as in the islands in the south. Thailand is for sure a unique country that offers plenty for each and every traveler. From budget backpacker to the most luxury travelers.

My daughter and I have traveled through this beautiful country numerous times, and the memories we’ve made here continue to inspire my love for adventure, culture, and incredible food. Let me run you through the best the country has to offer.

Bangkok – Malls, Markets, and Nightlife

Bangkok is the pulse of Thailand. Its chaotic, colorful, and endlessly fascinating. Bangkok’s nightlife is legendary, from rooftop bars with skyline views to crazy nightclubs that don’t stop until dawn. I just watched the movie the Hangover again and it makes you wanna head into the heart of the chaos and make some unforgettable experiences.

If your looking for nature, peace & tranquillity, beaches and clean air Bangkok is definitely not for you. During the day getting into a mega shopping mall (there are dozens of them) is often the best choice.

Personally, i am not a big fan of Bangkok, as I don’t drink and my party life is behind me. Now i more enjoy the peace and quiet, nature and I prefer not to inhale deathly smog. But hey, thats me. Regardless, the times we went to Bangkok we had loads of fun and its something you need to experience.

Ayutthaya – Ancient Ruins and History

Instead of staying in Bangkok, you can take a short 1 hour trip to Ayutthaya. I took a day trip to Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and had the privilege to explore the impressive ruins of what was once the capital of the Kingdom of Siam.

The ancient temples and statues left me stunned and the city is great to spend the afternoon and evening. A boat ride along the river also provides a unique view of the historical park and its impressive ruins.

Ayutthaya offers also a peaceful vibe that allows you to soak in its beauty at your own pace. You can rent a bicycle or tuk-tuk to navigate through the ruins, stopping at local markets for snacks and souvenirs. The night market is perfect for trying traditional Thai food, and the sunsets over the historical temples make for an unforgettable experience.

The North of Thailand – Culture, Nature, and Mountain Retreats

Northern Thailand captured us with its peaceful landscapes, where mountains meet rice fields, and jungles stretch as far as the eye can see. We loved the slower pace, where local traditions are still alive and vibrant, and every corner feels authentic.

The spiritual energy in the air made the region feel unique, with a deep connection to the land and its people. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, offering space for reflection, discovery, and a real sense of belonging.

Chiang Mai – Best of Old and New

If you’re craving peace and a taste of Thailand’s rich culture, head to Chiang Mai. This city blends the old with the new beautifully—ancient temples like Wat Phra That Doi Suthep overlook a vibrant mix of cafés, markets, and cozy guesthouses. The laid-back vibe makes it perfect for wandering the Old City’s narrow streets, discovering hidden temples, or enjoying a coffee at a trendy café.

Coco Heaven in a Chiang Mai Restaurant

Chiang Mai is also a food lover’s dream, offering budget-friendly northern Thai dishes like Khao Soi and Sai Oua. Beyond the city, the natural beauty of mountains, waterfalls, and forests awaits. Whether you’re visiting the Elephant Nature Park or hiking to a hill tribe village, Chiang Mai provides the perfect mix of culture, adventure, and tranquility.

Chiang Rai: The White Temple

When you head even further north, you’ll find yourself in Chiang Rai, nestled in the heart of Thailand’s mountain region. Here, you’ll encounter the stunning White Temple, which is an architectural masterpiece that feels like an artist’s dream come to life.

Completely white, with intricate details and surreal designs, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Walking through it, I was completely mesmerized, and the experience left a lasting impression on me. It’s truly a place that stays with you long after you’ve left and should be mentioned in the best places of Thailand.

Pai – Laid-back Vibes in Northern Thailand

If you’re looking for a laid-back retreat, Pai is the place to go. Nestled in northern Thailand, this charming town offers a refreshing change of pace. When I was here I spent my days exploring hot springs, hiking to waterfalls, and enjoying the quiet beauty of the countryside.

Pai’s vibe is relaxed and welcoming, making it the perfect place to recharge. Whether you’re a solo traveler or with friends, the slower pace of Pai is a refreshing escape.

Phuket – The Biggest and Most Visited Island of Thailand

The southern islands are where Thailand’s true beach paradise lies. Phuket is the most famous and for many one of the best places of Thailand. It has a big international airport and is the true gateway to the south of Thailand. Great for partying and relaxing on a beautiful beach, but the true beauty lies in the other lesser known islands.

My personal opinion on Phuket?
Phuket is best for a short stay, just a few days max. It’s much more expensive than the rest of Thailand, and the main tourist areas are crowded with loud tourists. The island’s busiest spots feel more like a long strip of bars and restaurants then an authentic Thai experience, which I find disappointing. If you do plan to visit, make sure to book your hotel well in advance, especially during high season.

James Bond Island excursion. We had an amazing day!

Pro Tip: Do the tour to Koh Phi Phi and The James Bond Island. These are the best and easiest to access from Phuket and are very much worth the money. We absolutely loved these excursions and they offer the best and most beautiful white sand beaches Thailand has to offer, including lunch and hotel pickups for great value.

Whats also a unique experience here in Phuket are the Muay Thai Boxing Matches in Patong Stadium. All available through our partner Get Your Guide below.

My Favourite Islands in the South

My personal favourite islands in the south are the smaller and lesser known ones. Koh Tao has given us such special memories and we just love coming back here.
Next Railay Beach, which is not really an island, is great for a few days of pure Thai beauty and to top it all of we truly enjoy Koh Lanta.

Koh Tao – Small but Filled with Adventure

Koh Tao might be small, but it has everything we love about island life. We first came here for the diving, as it’s one of the cheapest places in the world to get a PADI certification. But we quickly realised it’s so much more than just a diving destination.

Just before hopping on a boat to go Night Diving in Koh Tao

The thrill of spotting sea turtles and reef sharks up close made every dive unforgettable. It’s no surprise that so many travelers come for a few days and end up staying for weeks, sometimes indefinite, completely drawn in by the island’s charm.

But what really makes Koh Tao special is how effortlessly it blends adventure with a buzzing social scene. After days spent diving, we found ourselves joining the island’s legendary pub crawl, the biggest in Asia! Where beach bars, fire shows, and endless laughter kept the night alive. It truly is one of the Best Places of Thailand!

There’s something about dancing barefoot in the sand, surrounded by people from all over the world, that makes this island feel like home. Whether it’s early morning dives or late-night adventures, Koh Tao always delivers an experience we won’t forget.

Railay Beach

Railay Beach is a dream destination for adventure lovers and beach seekers alike. With one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand and the famous Rock in the ocean, gives memorable shots that any photographer gets jealous off. Then you have the hike to the Railay Viewpoint, which is short but steep, rewarding you with breathtaking views over the turquoise waters and towering limestone cliffs.

For those looking for a hidden gem, the secret lagoon is worth the climb. Tucked inside the cliffs, it feels like a lost world. Rock climbing is another must-try, with world-class routes right on the beach, perfect for both beginners and experienced climbers.

After a day of exploring, Railay’s laid-back nightlife is the perfect way to unwind and have fun. Beachfront bars offer fresh cocktails, fire shows, and a chilled-out vibe where travelers come together. The Last Bar is a favorite, known for its lively atmosphere and live music. Whether you’re hiking, kayaking, or just soaking in the scenery, Railay Beach delivers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.

Here are some great and best rated excursions from our Go To Activity Partner in Asia. With hotel pickup and often lunch included, there is need to worry and your certain for a great day.

Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta has a way of making you slow down and enjoy the moment. Riding a scooter along quiet coastal roads, we found hidden beaches, local cafés, and stunning sunset spots. Hiking through Mu Ko Lanta National Park to the lighthouse was tough but worth it for the ocean views. Snorkeling at Koh Rok felt like swimming in an aquarium, with crystal-clear water and colorful marine life all around.

Beyond our adventures, Koh Lanta has plenty to explore. Kayaking through mangrove forests and touring Khao Mai Kaew Cave offer a taste of the island’s wilder side. Lanta Old Town, with its stilt houses and seafood restaurants, gives a glimpse into local life. Whether you’re after adventure or relaxation, Koh Lanta has it all.

Krabi – We loved it here!

Krabi, with its stunning limestone cliffs, will have you feeling like you’ve stepped into a postcard. Krabi has always felt like the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation and makes one of the best places of Thailand for us. One of my favorite memories is taking a traditional longtail boat out to Railay Beach, feeling the salty breeze while passing by dramatic rock formations.

View When coming on a longboat to Railay Beach

Beyond the beaches, Krabi has a more laid-back charm that makes it easy to slow down and enjoy the moment. We spent a morning at the Emerald Pool, hiking through the lush jungle before jumping into the crystal-clear waters. The nearby Blue Pool, with its surreal hues, was just as mesmerising.

And the local markets, filled with great street food and friendly vendors, felt like a glimpse into everyday Thai life. I have written an extensive guide on the Night Markets in Krabi, i can definitely recommend checking it out and paying a visit when your in the area.

Best Things to Do in Thailand

Here are some of the best things you can do in Thailand and that the country is well known for. These are by far our favourite activities and these combined activities are the reason why we love Thailand so much.

Island Hopping & Snorkeling

You can’t visit Thailand without exploring its islands. We went island-hopping in Krabi, where we discovered small, secluded beaches that felt like our own private paradise (when you go in off season).

If you’re into water sports, you’ll love snorkeling in crystal-clear waters. The marine life here is vibrant and diverse. Whether it’s the Phi Phi Islands or the less-known Koh Lanta or Koh Tao, island hopping is a must-do experience in the South.

Exploring Temples and Historical Sites

Thailand is home to some of the most beautiful temples I’ve ever seen. Wat Pho, Wat Arun, and the Emerald Buddha Temple in Bangkok are must-visits, and don’t forget the White Temple in Chiang Rai far in the North, which is one of my favourite temples in the world. Each temple tells a unique story about Thai culture and spirituality, and I never grow tired of exploring them.

Thai Food Experiences and Night Markets

One of the biggest highlights of our trips to Thailand has been the food. Whether you’re digging into a steaming bowl of Pad Thai or sampling local street food like mango sticky rice or satay skewers, Thailand’s food scene is unbeatable.

Don’t miss out on the night markets. They’re full of delicious snacks, from spicy papaya salad to fresh seafood. Some of the best meals I had came from a simple food stall on the street and we always go hunting in the evening for the best street food.

Night markets are for me one of the best places of Thailand

Adventure Activities: Hiking, Diving, and Rock Climbing

For the adventurers, Thailand is a playground. I went hiking in Chiang Mai, and the views from the mountains were breathtaking. If diving is your thing, the islands in the south offer some of the best spots in the world. Koh Tao, in particular, is famous for its clear waters and vibrant coral reefs. If you’re up for rock climbing, Krabi’s towering limestone cliffs offer the perfect challenge.

Wrap Up – Best Places of Thailand

Thailand is a land of contrasts and this is one of the reasons we love it and keep coming back. Its where modernity meets tradition, and nature blends seamlessly with ancient history. It’s a place that will stay with you long after your trip ends.

Whether you’re diving into the cultural heart of Bangkok, relaxing on an island in the south, or hiking through northern Thailand, there’s always something new and exciting to discover. Trust me, you’ll fall in love with Thailand just like we both did.
