Entrance of Phnom Penh Night Market

Phnom Penh Night Market – Is it Worth Visiting?

I always have a special place in my heart for night markets, and whenever I’m in Southeast Asia, I’m always on the lookout for the next one to explore. There’s something about the way these markets come to life after dark, with the mix of street food, music, and local vendors creating an atmosphere that feels electric. I

I’ve been lucky enough to wander through vibrant markets in cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Hanoi and many more and each with its own unique charm. So, when I arrived in Phnom Penh, I couldn’t wait to check out the Night Market, hoping to experience that same magic I’ve come to love.

Unfortunately, the Phnom Penh Night Market didn’t quite live up to the hype. Unlike the bustling, colorful markets I’ve visited before, this one felt a bit lacklustre. The food didn’t pack the same punch, and the shops didn’t have the variety or local flair I was used to.

Rather than feeling like a cultural hub, it felt more like a commercialised stop, lacking the authenticity and excitement I had hoped for. Despite my love for night markets, this one didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Regardless i will share my findings here and why it lacks in comparison with the many other night markets i have visited.

What to Expect at Phnom Penh Night Market

Location and Timing:

When we visited the Phnom Penh Night Market, the sun was just about to go down and the market started to get its vibrant evening glow. It’s located right in the heart of the city, near the riverfront where Streets 106 and 108 meet, which makes it accessible from any direction.

📍 Here is the pin location

It opens around 5 PM and runs until midnight, which aligned well with our evening plans. Lots of tuktuk’s in the city and we always use Grab app in South East Asia.

Atmosphere:

The night I was there, the Phnom Penh Night Market had a lively vibe, with people milling about, enjoying the evening. It felt like a typical night market, with enough energy to keep things interesting but not too chaotic. Especially when the stage gets used and there is someone singing (not Karaoke please) then it gets even better.

The nice touch about this market is the carpets in the center of the food court, if i can call it that. With pillows makes it an interesting touch and adds to the lovely atmosphere of this market.

My Favourite thing at the market, the carpets to eat as a community

Goods on Offer:

However, I was disappointed with the variety of goods. From what I saw, the items were mostly low quality, with lots of similar products repeating across stalls. There wasn’t the diversity I was hoping for, whether it was in souvenirs, clothing, or local handicrafts. Most of them were clothing, shoes and some fake jewelry stands.

It seemed like a missed opportunity to showcase more of Cambodia’s rich artistic heritage what we saw in Siem Reap everywhere we walked. There was nothing of quality or real Cambodian making on this market, so that was quickly finished for us.

Our Culinary Experience of Phnom Penh Night Market

On any market, therefore also at the Phnom Penh Night Market, we’re always on the lookout for decent, healthy meal options. We discovered a unique feature where people were cooking their own food on shared grill plates. It was like a community barbecue where you could pick your ingredients – fresh vegetables, lean meats – and cook them right there.

I watched a group of friends laughing and chatting as they manoeuvred their chopsticks over the grill, turning their meal into a social event.

However, our experiences with food and also the fruit shakes was less than ideal. My fruit shake had an off-putting, soap-like flavour, so we steered clear of those small stands offering them. Instead, we focused on vendors with fresh, wholesome ingredients for a satisfying, health-conscious meal and had some decent but not special meals we were hoping for.

Here also as with the shops, most of the food stands were the same or similar. Not giving a nice variety we were expecting from other areas and counties in Asia. And we found the quality pretty basic and not even as cheap as we would expect. With the exception of a Waffles and Burger stand at the center of the Phnom Penh Night Market.

Little bit let down we decided to find a restaurant in the area with a good reputation and reviews and took the tuktuk and headed out of the market.

Wrap up: Phnom Penh Night Market

In reflecting on our visit to the Phnom Penh Night Market, it’s clear that it’s a place of contrasts. On one hand, the market offers a unique dining experience where you can cook your own healthy meals on communal grills, fostering a sense of community and connection.

This aspect, along with the occasional live music or the scenic riverside setting, makes for memorable moments. However, the variety of goods can be somewhat disappointing, often lacking in quality and diversity. Additionally, our adventure with the local fruit shakes and the not so special food was a miss, highlighting that not all culinary ventures here hit the mark.

Despite these drawbacks, the Phnom Penh Night Market holds its charm, especially for those looking to immerse themselves in a slice of Cambodian life. It’s a place where you can enjoy a decent meal in good company, haggle for some basic souvenirs, and perhaps stumble upon a cultural performance.

The question then becomes, are you willing to navigate through the less appealing aspects to discover the authentic, vibrant experiences that lie beneath the surface of this market?
