Where is Kedungu Beach

It is on the east side of Bali, right above Canggu. You can access it via Jalan Pantai Kedungu, and itโ€™s roughly a 1-hour drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Its also a great stop before heading to the beautiful North of Bali.

Discovering Kedungu Beach

Its about a 15 minute drive from the center of Canggu, and located at the upcoming area of Cemagi. Since Canggu is getting more and more over crowded with party goers and beach enthusiasts, I always love to go to Cemagi. It’s a great place to stay and still a quick drive to all of Canggu’s activities and restaurants. It also still has the beautiful balinese look and feel that I love so much.

Kedungu Beach has the best beach in the area and still feels undiscovered and very peaceful, more so outside the high season. The first time I rolled up to Kedungu Beach, I knew Iโ€™d found something special.

Unlike Cangguโ€™s crowded vibe, Kedungu is quieter, almost like Bali before the tourist boom. The black volcanic sand stretches wide, framed by rice fields and palm trees that scream โ€œtropical paradise.โ€ Itโ€™s raw and unpolished, with a calm that hits you as soon as you park.

Disadvantages of Kedungu Beach

Downside is that it can feel very secluded and sometimes even cold. It has no luxury restaurants of any kind, just a few local Warungs to get some drinks or a small bite. The best place is Surf Shack, that has a chill vibe in it, but is mostly for surfer enthusiasts and feels very basic.

But don’t let this discourage you, its just me being transparent and setting the right expectations for you.

Secret Beach – Right next to the main beach

Right on the left of the main beach is a ยจprivateยจ area, where you will have even more privacy. The beach is also clean and really nice. Just keep going to the left and you will find it once you cross the statue.

Kedungu Beach for Families

Kedungu Beach is a fantastic family spot. The gentle slope into the ocean makes it a breeze for them to walk and swim in, with crystal-clear visibility that lets you keep an eye on their every splash. The black-sand beach stretches out wide and open, giving little ones plenty of room to build epic sandcastles or run around to their heartโ€™s content.

On some places on the beach there are some rocks and vegetation in the water, so supervision is key, especially for younger kids. The beachโ€™s calm atmosphere, especially around sunset is perfect for a family picnic or a nice beach stroll.

What I love most is the peaceful, uncrowded vibe. Itโ€™s like your own private escape, especially during the crowded July and August months when other beaches get packed. Itโ€™s the perfect place to unwind, soak in the calm, and make family memories you’ll cherish.

Surfing at Kedungu Beach Bali

Kedungu Beach offers 3 Surf Breaks
– Main break: beginners to intermediate
– Left hand break: 30 meters infront of cliff – intermediate to advanced
– Foam of Left hand break – fun option to surf in

Kedungu Beach Bali is a solid spot for surfing, offering a mix of waves for all levels, though itโ€™s less crowded than places like Canggu. Itโ€™s got three main break points: the main peak is an A-frame wave with consistent left and right breaks, perfect for beginners and intermediates to practice turns and cutbacks, especially when the swell is moderate.

About 25-60 meters from shore, a faster left-hander forms in front of the cliff, ideal for advanced surfers with barrels during big swells (8-12 ft) and low tideโ€”though itโ€™s tricky with rocks and sea urchins, so watch your step. For newbies, a second section around 25 meters out provides a long, foamy wave to learn the basics safely.

Best times are early morning or late afternoon when winds are lighter. Mid to high tide works well for mellow rides, but low tide can get reefy and dangerous. Stick to smaller swells if youโ€™re starting out.

Surf Shack, offer lessons and board rentals. Just be cautious of the powerful shorebreak, especially at high tide, and respect local surfers by using channels to avoid collisions. Itโ€™s a laid-back vibe with great potential, but safety and tide awareness are key!

Tip: Always check with locals (Surf Shack) before entering the ocean with surfing, for best spot based on your level and key things to look out for.

Wrap up Kedungu Beach Bali – Is it worth it or not

Wrapping up Kedungu Beach, Bali; yeah, itโ€™s definitely worth it! Based on my multiple visits and the vibe Iโ€™ve soaked in, this black-sand gem offers a chill escape from Baliโ€™s busier spots like Canggu or Kuta. The wide shoreline, gentle slope for wading, and epic sunsets (especially around 6:00-6:30 PM) make it a hit for families and people seeking peace.

Surfingโ€™s a bonus with waves for all levels, and the nearby Tanah Lot Temple adds a cultural twist. Itโ€™s peaceful, less crowded, and surrounded by rice fields. Perfect for a real Bali experience.

Sure, there are quirks. Swimming in some parts can be tricky with rocks. Facilities are basic, and food options are slim, so youโ€™ll need to plan ahead. But the natural beauty, seasonal waterfall, and laid-back local vibe outweigh the hassles. Visiting during the dry season (March-August) maximizes the fun, though rainy months bring the waterfallโ€™s charm.

For me, itโ€™s a no-brainer. Kedunguโ€™s worth every minute, especially if you value tranquility and authenticity over polished resorts and busy beaches. Just respect the place, keep it clean, and youโ€™ll leave loving it as much as I do!
